New Every Morning
It is of the LORD's mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.
Lamentations is a book of grief. Jerusalem had fallen, and the writer pours out sorrow for chapters. Then, in the middle of the ruins, comes one of the most hopeful lines in Scripture.
The writer doesn't find hope because things got better. He finds it by remembering who God is: His mercies keep us, His compassions never run out, and His faithfulness is great. Hope here is a decision to call to mind what is true about God when everything else feels uncertain.
"New every morning" means yesterday's failures don't use up today's mercy. You don't start the day in debt. Whatever you said, did, or didn't do yesterday, God meets you this morning with fresh compassion.
This is good news for anyone who feels stuck — in a habit, a regret, or a season of sadness. You may not feel new. But God's mercy is new, and it's waiting for you before you even get out of bed.
Try this tomorrow: before you check your phone, say one sentence to God. "Thank You that Your mercy is new this morning." Small habits like that can slowly reshape how we face our days.
Pray
Lord, thank You that Your mercies are new this morning. I receive Your fresh compassion for today.
Reflect & discuss
What regret or disappointment do you need to leave in yesterday?
Bring this to your tether partner or small group this week.
